  For quite a few years since the Rio-Summit, 1992 there have been discussions at various local forum about the requirement of a capable institution to take care of the rich biodiversity of Manipur and its surrounding areas. The inclusion of the North East Region in the list of Mega-biodiversity hotspots of the world caused an ever increased fillip to the researchers, resource planners, environmental enthusiasts and the local think- tanks about stopping depletion of biodiversity in the region and finding scientific ways of sustainable uses of bioresources. Major research activities    
  • Databases on Citrus of Manipur (20 species records) is developed and published on DISC website.
  • Databases on Medicinal & Edible insects of NE (60 species records) and Cyanobacteria of Manipur (492 strain data) are under development.
  • A bioinformatics tool for Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) is developed for genomic DNA analysis.
  • Bioinformatics application program on ReBASE is under development with graphical features for easy interface and analysis.
  • Centre is maintaining websites of the Institute.
  • The centre acts as in-charge for conducting the IBSD JRF-Ph.D. and conducting Practical training programme of the Institute.
  • Centre is maintaining DBT's electronic Library Consortium (DeLCON) to provide access and assistance to the Institute and other users.
