BTISNET - Sub-Distributed Information Centre
ADVANCED CENTRE FOR TREATMENT RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN CANCER, (ACTREC), MUMBAI

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, funded to establish the Biotechnology Information Service (BTIS)/Bioinformatics Centre at the Cancer Research Institute in 1989. Since its inception DBT has maintained its financial support to centre.
TMC-ACTREC has also provided necessary inputs as and when required for gradual maturation of the facility. In addition to expansion of the institutional infrastructure, increasing number of users for full use of facility is also focused. In this year 2010, ACTRE has provided two additional high - end workstations.

Apart from the institute sponsored VSNL provided internet leased line, DBT continued funding of a wireless leased line from ‘Tulip’ for 250 Kbps port and this has resulted in almost zero down time internet availability at the ACTREC. Presently, the software available in the centre are extensively used by four groups which comprise senior, middle level scientists, Ph. D students and number of projects trainees from ACTREC as well as various academic institutes.

BTIS-SubDIC at ACTREC organizes every year a two-day workshop targeting faculties/Ph.D. students from various colleges/universities to provide theme basic knowledge to modern approaches/tools and applications of bioinformatics. This helps them in teaching bioinformatics related subjects in their home institute.

Major research activities
  • The major focus of the institute is basic and translational research in cancer biology.
  • The detailed list of scientists working on different aspects of basic and translational research biology are available in our institute web-site http://www.actrec.gov.in/basic_main.htm.
  • Bioinformatics related activities are data-base analysis, structural bioinformatics, molecular modeling, and structure based drug design.
  • Genomics, proteomics of breast cancer, oral cancer, and cervical cancer are also targeted
  • Molecular imaging for targeting cancer specific genes/proteins
