About the Bioinformatics Centre
 

The Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) Centre, funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India is well equipped with advanced technology and well maintained by the Department of Biotechnology, S. Kula Women’s College, Nambol, Manipur. The Centre is mainly focused on the Biodiversity of the endangered species of Manipur and Phylogeny analysis of Banana of Manipur. The Centre has appointed Two Research Assistants, One Traineeship, One Studentship and One Technical Assistant; One Post of Information Officer is needed for the Centre in the near future.

The BIF Centre of S. Kula Women’s College, Nambol, Manipur has been organized one National Seminar on “Application of Bioinformatics in Biodiversity” on 25th and 26th October, 2009 under the sponsorship of UGC. The Centre has been organized six (6) training Programme and Ten (10) Outreach Lecture Programme at the nearby Institutions on the Applications of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.
 

Area of Specialization: Plant molecular biology & Molecular design of nucleic acid structures.

 
Objectives
  1. To enhance and expand the knowledge of Bioinformatics & its application to all the faculty members and students.
  2. To organize extension /outreach programmes to the neighbouring institutions about the applications of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology.
  3. To make research collaboration with other institutions and industries at national and international level to make the staffs and students more exposure.
  4. Organization of regular training programme on Bioinformatics & its applications.
  5. Submission of DNA sequences of Banana of Manipur to NCBI.
 
Current area of research
  • Construction of phylogenetic tree of Bananas of Manipur.
  • Sequence analysis.
  • Biodiversity data analysis.
 
Inter Institutional collaboration
  • The Centre is collaboration with Department of Biotechnology, Mizoram University; Department of Biochemistry, Manipur University; Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Central Agriculture University, Imphal.
Achievements at a glance
  • The BIF Centre of S. Kula Women’s College, Nambol, Manipur has been organized one National Seminar on “Application of Bioinformatics in Biodiversity” on 25th and 26th October, 2009 under the sponsorship of UGC.
  • A 2-day Training Program on “Metabolic pathway related to bioinformatics” was organized by the Centre during 30th -31st, March, 2012.
  • Presented Two Papers on a UGC sponsored National Seminar on 27th -28th September, 2012.
  • Regular classes on Bioinformatics and its application for undergraduate students.
  • The Centre has been organized six (6) training Programme on different topics of Bioinformatics
  • The Centre has been organized Ten (10) Outreach Lecture Programme at the nearby Institutions on the Applications of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.


About the Institution
 

The S. Kula Women’s College is a Government aided Undergraduate Institution recognized by the UGC under Section 2(f) & 12 (b) of the UGC, Act, 1956. The college is conferred the status of “Colleges with Potential for Excellence” by the University Grants Commission in 2006 and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to “A” Grade in 2012. The college has a total campus with 2 Mbps Broad Band Connectivity under NMEICT and 512 kbps 1:1 dedicated connectivity from Bharati Airtel. The Library is automated with SOUL 2.0 Network Version and digitalization of the library is under process. The library has subscribed e- resources under the scheme of National Mission on Education through ICT. The college has adopted a total ICT based teaching-learning and evaluation process. The college has introduced a number of diversified courses like B.Sc. Biotechnology, B.Sc. Food Technology, BCA over and above conventional B.A/B.Sc./B.Com. General and Honours courses. Besides above, the college has also introduced some of the Career Oriented add-on courses, namely; i) Bioinformatics in Biodiversity, ii) Industrial Fish and Fisheries, iii) Food Science & Quality Control, iv) Computer Application, v) Microbiology (Food and Environmental),  vi) Mushroom Cultivation, vii) Fashion Designing, viii) Secretarial Practice and Office Management and ix) E-Commerce, etc. under the Career Oriented Programme of the UGC. The Science students including that of Botany, Zoology and Biotechnology are also undergoing Short Term Research Projects under the scheme of Basic Scientific Research (BSR) of the UGC.

It may be noted that the S. Kula Women’s College is the only College in Manipur State which has introduced B.Sc. Biotechnology and B.Sc. Food Processing Technology. The above two courses were introduced in the college under the Innovative Programme of the UGC and under Human Resource Development Scheme of Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India respectively.
