About the Institution

Mizoram falls under the ‘Eastern Himalayas’ & Aizawl is the state capital. It is situated at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. The importance of this region at the global stage can be vouched from the fact that the region lies within the Indo-Burma mega diversity hotspot. The total area of Mizoram is 21,087 km2, the majority of it being forest cover.
Mizoram University was established as a Central University by an Act of Parliament of India on 25th April 2000 and started functioning from 2nd July 2001. Prior to this, the University inherited from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) had functioned as Mizoram Campus for 24 year since 1979. The main campus of Mizoram University rests on a plot of land measuring 978.1988 acres with its lush green scenic hills, at Tanhril, a village in the western outskirt of Aizawl City. It is now undergoing a sea change, and has embarked on various programmes/schemes in terms of academic, administrative and infrastructural development.
The University Library System consists of a fully automated Central Library and computerized Bibliographic information is accessible through Campus network (Intranet) using Web OPAC, automation of Examination and Finance Sections, as well intra campus network and Internet facilities are also available.
The University offers M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., M.S.W., M.B.A., Mass Communication, Library and Information Science, B.Tech in Information Technology, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, M.Phil and Ph.D courses. The University also has the distinction of having unique departments like the Department of Horticulture, Aromatic and Medicinal Plants (HAMP), the Department of Environmental Sciences, and the Department of Extension Education & Rural Development. There are 28 affiliated colleges and 1 constituent College “Pachhunga University College” under Mizoram University.
The Administration is also taking steps to fulfil the pending objective of making the university campus eco-friendly and self sufficient in power by generating solar energy of 1.5 megawatt.
