About the Bioinformatics Centre
 
Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility Centre, D. M. College of Science, Imphal (presently located in the Department of Zoology) was established on the 4th June 2008 under the sponsorship of Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, New Delhi under the BTBI (Biology Teaching through Bioinformatics) scheme. Since its inception, the BIF Centre has been working towards achievement of the objectives mandated by the DBT.

Objectives
  • To support the teaching activities in Biology and allied areas in the host institute in particular and the neighbouring institutes in general.
  • To build up information resources, prepare databases of interest to users and to develop relevant information handling tools and techniques.
  • To access information requirements, organize creation of necessary infrastructure and to provide information and computer support services to the users.
  • To provide linkages with BTISnet of DBT for sharing information resources and expertise.
  • To organize Training/Workshops for familiarizing the application of Bioinformatics in Biology teaching and learning activities.
  • To establish D. M. College of Science as a National Nodal Knowledge Centre for Bio-resources Informatics in the NE India.

About the Institution

Eastern facade of Dhanamanjuri College
Dhanamanjuri College, in short, the D. M. College, was established on Tuesday, the 6th August 1946 with the generous donation of a sum of Rs. 10,000 (Rupees ten thousand) by the Dowager Queen, Maharani Dhanamanjuri Devi of Manipur, after whose name the College was named. D. M. College is situated in the heart of the Imphal City. In 1946, D. M. College was first affiliated to the Calcutta University.  In August 1949, College became affiliated to Gauhati University. In 1981, when Manipur University was established, D. M. Colleges became affiliated under it.
During the 1960s, in addition to the undergraduate classes in science, arts and commerce, it had post-graduate classes in Mathematics, Economics and History. The post-graduate classes were held in the evening. In 1972 the post-graduate classes got merged with the JNU Centre, Imphal which was later on shifted to Canchipur, the present site of the Manipur University. In 1975, D. M. College was bifurcated into two colleges, viz., D. M. College of Science and D. M. College of Arts and Commerce. D. M. College of Science retains the original campus, buildings and other assets of the erstwhile D. M. College. D. M. College of Arts and Commerce later became bifurcated into two colleges, viz. D. M. College of Arts and D. M. College of Commerce. With the establishment of a new D. M. College of Teachers' Education, there are at present, four colleges in the D. M. College campus. The State Government has recently initiated steps for conversion of D. M. College into a “D. M. College State University”.

Inter Institutional collaboration

The North-eastern areas of the Country is a treasurehouse of bioresources including plants, animals, fungi, microbes, etc. The region has a rich age-old traditional knowledge also on the use of plants and animals in the treatment or alleviation of various ailments. 'Development of a Digital Database on Bioresources of NE India - Through a Network Approach among the NE States' (sanctioned vide order no. BT/29/NE/2011 dt. 28th Nov. 2011) is a consortium project sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi. The Project approved cost is Rs. 258.86 lakhs for a three year period. Prof. K. N. Ganeshaiah of Bangalore University is the Mentor of the project.  The objective of the network project is to study, identify and ascertain the bioresource value (medicinal or otherwise) of these bioresources. The project is being implimented by a consortium of 8 institutes in the NE region, viz. Manipur University, Canchipur, D. M. College of Science, Imphal, Guwahati University, Guwahati, Mizoram University, Aizawl, Nagaland University, Lumami, Nagaland,  NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh, Mountain Institute of India, Sikkim, Tripura University, Agartala. The first 'Annual Progress Report for the period 2012-13, has been approved by the Expert Committee  constituted by the DBT.
