ASSAM UNIVERSITY, SILCHAR - 788 011, INDIA

About the Bioinformatics Centre

The Bioinformatics Centre, Assam University, Silchar is directly sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India to explore the bright new areas of Bioinformatics in data management, algorithm development and data mining. The Centre was established in the year 2008 with full financial assistance from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India under DBT-BIF scheme. Since its birth it is actively associated with the popularizing Bioinformatics applications in Biological researches in Southern Assam and North East India as a whole. The Department of Life Science, Assam University took special initiative to establish this centre. In January 2009, the Bioinformatics Laboratory was inaugurated by the then Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee. The Centre organizes workshops, seminars, training programmes etc. from time to time for the popularization of Biology Teaching through Bioinformatics and also to generate awareness on Bioinformatics. Moreover, our Post Graduate Diploma in Bioinformatics (PGDBI) is a thoughtful career oriented programme. . For more information and database access visit www.bioinfoaus.ac.in

Area of Specialization: Computer Aided Drug Designing is the main thrust area of the centre. The centre is actively engaged in research on Natural Product based Computer Aided Drug Designing.

Objectives
Being situated in one of remotest corners of the country, the main aim of the centre is to spread the knowledge of Bioinformatics in the region. Moreover carrying high quality research and developing products utilizing the knowledge of Bioinformatics and the natural resources of the region is one of the major objectives of the centre.
Achievements at a glance
a) Conducted several training programs on different arena of Bioinformatics. b) Published several papers in High Quality pure Bioinformatics journals. c) In November 2013, the centre organized a National Conference on Contemporary Bioinformatics Researches in India, which is first of its kind in entire North East. d) Hosted the 6th NEBInet meet during 11-12 November 2013. e) Developed and managing the website of the centre and few Biological databases. f) Coordinates the e-Journals access facility in Assam University under DBT e-Library Consortium.

Current area of research

Natural Product based Computer Aided Drug Designing is the main area of research in the centre. The natural products isolated from the important and endemic medicinal plants of this region are screened for their therapeutic activities to establish them as drug lead.

About the Institution

TAssam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989(Established under an Act of Parliament) . It was established in 1994,since then the University is steadily becoming an excellent centre of learning. The campus, situated in Dargakona, about 20 kms from Silchar, is set amid sprawling hillocks, a typical landscape in the North East. The campus in an area of 600 acres surrounded by lakes and mountains provides an ideal environment for academic pursuit. Drawing its 300 plus faculty from many disciplines, from all over the country, the university sustains a multidisciplinary approach to higher education. The University has sixteen Schools on major disciplines. There are 35 Departments under these sixteen Schools.
