About the Bioinformatics Centre

Bioinformatics Centre, Gurucharan College, Silchar has completed 4 years of establishment and successfully achieving its goal by doing good numbers of training, seminar, demonstration and outreach programme. The mandate of the centre is to provide infrastructural facility for utilization of Bioinformatics tools for understanding, study and development in Biological sciences. Since its inception, the centre has marched forward steadily and has created adequate facility for study and exchange of biological information through communication system network among the Bioinformatics Centres.

Research scholars’ and faculty members are currently utilizing the Bioinformatics infrastructure facility to its maximum extent. Some of the initial works are being carried out in Institutional Biotech Hub of this college and thereafter their in-silico studies are done. A good number of research papers have been published by researchers and faculty members.Students are also presenting their project paper in Conference and seminars |

MATSYA v.1.0 – |
MATSYA is a versatile tool for the effortless fish management and conservation. It can be easily downloaded and operated without having any prior knowledge on database structure and design. The entire programme has been converted into executable (*.exe) form to maintain the privacy of programming codes. Users can excess the database without any system permissions, editing/modifying operations can only be done through administrative tools which is password protected. The default password is password which can be changed anytime by user during the course of database handling. MATSYA V.1.0 thus proves to be an efficient tool for better fish management of Barak Valley region of Assam. |

The centre has collaboration with Department of Biotechnology and Department of Microbiology, Assam University, Silchar. In 2013, resource person from St. Edmunds College, Shillong, College of Veterinary Sciences, Khanapara, Assam and Mizoram University, Mizoram has delivered a lecture in Bioinformatics Centre of Gurucharan College, Silchar. |

About the Institution

Gurucharan College, established on 15th July 1935, is recognized as one of the premier institutions in the field of collegiate education. It has carved out a distinct identity of its own in the field of higher education in the eastern part of India. The well-acclaimed reputation of the college stands not on its vast area of land, buildings constructed on it or on its enrolment strength but on its enriched academic and intellectual legacy built up during the time-span of 78 years of its life at the cost of effort and sacrifices of a batch of dedicated personalities who left no stone unturned to erect this huge edifice of higher education in this Barak Valley. Today, this institution of potential for excellence is proud to have a large number of alumni who have established themselves in different professions and vocations of life in India and abroad. The college boasts of having student enrolment of about 3000 in Arts, Science and Commerce stream taking into account H.S. and Degree students. |

Infrastructure facilites |
The Bioinformatics Centre, Gurucharan College, Silchar has utilized the DBT sponsored BIF facility and provide online journal search, database search and retrieval and other basic facilities for undergraduate students, research scholars and teachers. The centre is having BBG super speed combo 6999 scheme of BSNL with a maximum speed of 24 mbps; this enables the user to easy and fast surfing. The centre is having its independent library which is being utilized the students, research scholars and faculty members are utilizing the library in its maximum extent. The centre is using DBT’s e-library Consortium (DeLCON) facility for journal search. |

Achievements at a glance |
Four new strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (strain code SN1, SN3, SN4 and SN5) have been isolated and identified on the basis of 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. They are submitted to NCBI-GenBank having accession numbers: KF031122, KF031123, KF447770 and KF447771.
Research scholars’ and faculty members are currently utilizing the Bioinformatics infrastructure facility to its maximum extent.
