BTISNET - Distributed Information Centre
  UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA, CALCUTTA

The Bioinformatics Centre of University of Calcutta was established in 1993 as one of the Sub-DICs under the BTIS programme of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. It was recognized as full DIC in 2003. The Center started One Year advanced Diploma Course in Bioinformatics since 1999-2000 academic session. The Centre with the Department of Biophysics, Molecular Bioliogy & Bioinformatics currently runs One year diploma cousrse and two year M.Sc. Course in Bioinformatics and Biophysics. The major thrust of the centre is Human resource generation through the courses it offers and to do research in the area of structural bioinformatics and systems biology.

Major research activities
  • Sequence-structure-functional relationship of different biomolecules using data mining, graph theory and simulation techniques.
  • Study conformational consequences of post transcriptional modifications of RNA bases and their role in t-RNA structure and function.
  • Studying single protein network to understand the underlying mechansims of protein structural organization, folding and stability
  • Systems biology
to understand the regulatory principle of A. Thaliana and O. Sativa
to identify the genetic blueprint and their regulation in spinal chord regeneration of Zebrafish
to identify the potential structural and functional units of metabolic and transcriptional regulatory pathways
to reconstruct and analyze the genome scale metabolism of rice
  • To apply string-variable grammer and push-down automata to identify important features imprinted in the biological sequences
