The Centre was
elevated to a Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics in
2003. In 2010, the MSc Computational Biology was started
as an upgradation of the Advanced Diploma Course and as
a network program with Anna University and Pondicherry
University. The Centre has been focusing its attention
mainly on development of research and manpower as well
as providing services in the areas of structural Bioinformatics,
proteomics, database development, data mining and molecular
modeling, dynamics and computer aided drug designing.
The Centre has an acclaimed reputation for service, teaching
and research in the area of Bioinformatics. A notable
feature is that the centre is highly accessible to teachers
and researchers in this region. The staff of the centre,
as an integrated activity, with the faculty of the School
of Biotechnology performs the research and teaching. The
Centre has been a catalyst for the growth of Bioinformatics
in this region and has contributed significantly to manpower
development.
Major research activities
Structural Bioinformatics of membrane proteins, Structural
Genomics of prophage proteins, Structural Genomics of
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Structural biology of microbial
stress response pathways, Computational analysis of
protein-protein interaction in chemokines and its receptors,
Large-scale Sequence Analysis, Molecular Modeling, Molecular
Docking, Molecular Dynamics, In silico Drug designing,
Data mining and text mining.
