BTISNET - Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility
  WEST BENGAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, KOLKATA
 
  The University came into operation formally in 2001 under West Bengal Act XV of 2000 passed by the West Bengal Legislature. The University is included in Section 2F and also in Section 12B of UGC and recipient of UGC Grant. The Department of Bioinformatics, founded in the year 2006 for PG teaching and research and recognized by UGC under its 12B regulation, offers courses in –M. Tech. in Bioinformatics (18 students) (only one of its kind in Eastern and North Eastern part of India) and Post B.Sc. Int. Ph.D in Bioinformatics (6 students); for details visit www.wbut.ac.in. The department is recognized as BIF by DBT, Govt. of India and it has been receiving grants from DBT, for “Establishment of Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) for the promotion of Biology Teaching through Bioinformatics (BTBI)”. The Centre regularly organizes workshops and seminars. Eminent Scientists from different Research Institutes, Universities, R&D organizations from all over the country deliver seminars on current research topics.

Major research activities    
  • Identification of functionally active short peptide motifs.
  • Molecular Design and Modeling using short peptide motifs (structure-function relation) applying spectroscopic techniques (especially NMR, CD etc) and computational method (Docking, MD Simulation); an implication towards drug design.
  • Application of Mass Spectrometry (MSn technique) for de novo sequencing and conformational aspects of proteins and natural peptides
  • Bioinformatics studies and Spectroscopic studies (13C NMR, FTIR, Powder XRD) for structural behavioural analysis, hetero-polymerization and mass production of a biological pigment
  • Pharmacophore modeling and database designing for comparative study; Analysis of anion binding motifs in proteins and their functional importance
  • Developed programs for: a) Detailed Hydrogen bond analysis for MD trajectories b) Phi Psi analysis and contour plot generation for MD trajectories c) Identification and Analysis of functional motifs (nests) in Proteins.
