About the Institution

Biotechnology is multidisciplinary subject with a very vast potential for human development especially in the area of human and animal health, food and nutrition, agricultural and animal sciences, environmental science and many other similar areas. The department of Biotechnology, established in the year 2000 through support from the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, has developed as an important academic centre of Uttarakhand state to impart postgraduate degrees in Biotechnology to science graduates from all over India selected by common entrance examination conducted by J.N.U, New Delhi. The students are offered courses like, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Cell Biology Molecular Genetics, Plant Biotechnology and Immunology. They also undergo training in institutes of repute and are required to undertake a research project in the last semester for partial fulfilment of the requirements for award of M.Sc. Degree. The Department of Biotechnology is having MOU’s with different esteemed Institutions of the Nation like CCMB Hyderabad, PDFMD Mukteshwar, DIBER Haldwani, FRI Dehradun, VIPKAS Almora, NDRI Karnal, NIMR New Delhi ,NBRI Lucknow, NRCPB New Delhi ,DCFR Bhimtal & Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology. DWR Karnal, GBPIHED Kosi katarmal Almora, NRCPB New Delhi MITS Sikar DSR Mau etc. After achieving a milestone in the field of M.Sc. Biotechnology, the department has also initiated Ph.D programme in Biotechnology in 2006 and the teaching of its subsidiary and important branch-Microbiology at post graduate level from 2010. The Passed out students have more than 95% success rate in acquiring fellowships through competitions at National level for PhD in institutes of their choice. Consequently they have secured admission for Doctoral degree in prestigious institutions like CCMB Hyderabad, IISc Banglore NIMHANS Banglore,IVRI izatnagar, NDRI Karnal, IMTECH Chandigarh, ITRC Lucknow, CDRI Lucknow, G.B. Pant University Pantnagar, IIT Roorkee, NCCS Pune, PGI Chandigarh, JNU New Delhi, IGIB new Delhi, ICGEB new Delhi etc. After completing their Ph.D many of them are working as Post Doctoral Scientists in reputed institutes of India and abroad.
