  CCS HARYANA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, HISAR

Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University popularly known as HAU is one of Asia's biggest agricultural universities, located at Hisar in the Indian state of Haryana. It is a leader in agricultural research in India and contributed significantly to Green Revolution and White Revolution in India in the 1960s and 70s. It won the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's Award for the Best Institute in 1997. To keep abreast with the developments in various fields of science and technology with a guided emphasis on agriculture, CCS HAU started a PG programme in Bioinformatics in 2004 in the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities.
The Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi has sanctioned a Bioinformatics Facility (BIF) under its BTISNet and provided financial support for the infrastructure.
In 2007, the University developed a separate state-of-the-art infrastructure for Bioinformatics with latest hardware and a 4 MBPS dedicated internet connectivity.
Till 2011 academic session, 80 students have graduated from this Section and are placed in various teaching and research institutions as well as pursuing Ph.D. in various international and national laboratories.
The Bioinformatics Section has a mandate to train manpower in Bioinformatics, carry out research with particular emphasis on agricultural sciences as well as provide Bioinformatics consultancy to students and scientists of various biological disciplines.
The Bioinformatics Section is running M.Sc. Bioinformatics since 2004. The course curriculum has been revised in 2010 as per the recommendations of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. A student admitted to this programme is required to study a major, a minor and a supporting subject and has to complete a thesis. The admission is through a competitive examination held every year, generally on second Saturday of June.

Teaching has been the main focus for first few years but now the faculty is undertaking research in broader areas - Computer aided drug design, QSAR, Homology Modeling, programming languages (perl, PHP), relational database, Data mining of Rice Genome.

Major research activities
The Section is working in following broad areas of research with particular emphasis on plants/crops
  • Structural and functional genomics
  • Structural and functional proteomics
  • Database design
  • Algorithms and programms
  • Knowledge Discovery in Databases (Data-mining)
